The One-Page Strategy and the Midwit Bell Curve

While writing this book, I travelled to New Jersey to meet my business mentor, Chris Orzechowski. We ended up chatting about marketing strategies for seven hours straight. During the conversation, one word kept cropping up—simplicity.

Chris was going through a complete business overhaul. In 2022, his company achieved $997,000 in top-line revenue. Despite his obvious success, Chris knew complexity was curtailing growth. So, he made drastic changes. Chris stripped everything back to focus on one offer—his monthly print newsletter. Chris then listed everything he could every day, week, and month to increase sales for his primary offer. Instead of disparate focus and trying to grow several income streams, he grew one—rapidly.

My business wasn’t turning over close to $1 million, but I had the same problem. And, if I didn’t address it now, my hard work, dedication, and drive would stifle growth.

When I had one lead magnet and one offer, sales came without confusion. But, to grow the business, I went broader instead of deeper. I introduced new courses, a newsletter, a community, and dozens of lead magnets. But this approach did more harm than good. Multiple front-end offers confused my prospects. People often asked the difference between the offers and which they should choose. And having dozens of lead magnets attracted freebie-seekers. The worst part... I was attracting the wrong customers. People subscribed to my monthly newsletter without having any foundations in place. I was writing about the latest insights from the bleeding edge of social media marketing. These strategies were useless for people who weren’t even posting content. As a result, churn was high.

It was my fault. I knew my avatar inside out and that they struggled with getting leads. The newsletter was a fantastic offer, but I was selling it to the wrong audience. Before contemplating the advanced strategies inside the newsletter, prospects needed the basics. The newsletter would make sense only with a foundation in the Posts to Profits process. I knew I had to simplify my business. I knew I had to take back control of the customer journey, delivering the right offer at the right time. Now, I have one front-end offer—Social Launch.

In trying to grow the business, I had broken my own rules of marketing. It’s proof we’re all human, and that building a business isn’t about constant success. Failure is part of the job.

Chris and I were both victims of the Midwit Bell Curve. Most businesses start simple. You don’t have a broad product range and an army of employees. It’s you and your service. You’re at the left side of the Midwit Bell Curve. You don’t know much about growing a business, so you keep everything simple because you have no choice. As you achieve success, you drift towards the peak of the Midwit Bell Curve.
